About this project
Our client owns the last floor of this beautiful corner building in the Valkenbos neighbourhood in The Hague and has the wish to do a modern sustainable roof extension. It was build in 1915 and falls under what is called transitional architecture, typical for the expansion districts that originally housed the better-paid workers of that period. The ornaments of this, quite sober, facade originate in this period.
The most characteristic features of this building are the ornamented eaves with continuous wall decorations and the accentuated chimneys. The architecture of the adjacent buildings correspond to the same line and style but the owner's property, being the corner house, is taller and has more intricate details.
After receiving the order for this sustainable roof construction, our first challenge was to make an extensive analysis of the building and environment. And especially how to let the structure blend in with the environment, despite the already different size of the building. In this design it was essential to retain the architectural features from the environmental point of view, but we still wanted to give the roof structure a striking character. All this without too much contrast. Due to the subtle design of the roof structure, we have managed to preserve the vertical design and the original rhythm of the building. By cladding the roof structure with aluminum combined with western Cedar wood, a balanced modern facade has been created that creates a subtle contrast between old and new. Sustainability was a matter of course in order for new to be really new. For this we chose high-quality insulation, aluminum frames with triple glazing, finished with a green roof with grass and plants. This also includes preparations for the future installation of solar panels. The end result is a beautiful organic blend of old-fashioned architecture and modern inventiveness, innovation and sustainability. The neighborhood has an eye-catcher.
