When we designed the Chalet XS, a tiny ski hut, our kids were a bit disappointed and asked us: where is the kid’s room? And we had to admit, that the Chalet XS was an ultimate getaway place for fresh powder lovers. But a ski-vacation can have other facets as well. So we decided to design a bigger chalet taking in consideration all the people who join us on our winter escapades. That is how our sustainable family chalet, Chalet XL, came to life. It is a three floor building, whose shape was defined by the mountain’s slope. The outside shell has been inspired by freshly prepared ski slopes, and the chosen material refers to the white and sparkly character of fresh snow. To top it off we engineered the latest sustainable technology into the design. On the roof there are PV (Photo-voltaic) solar panels and SWH (Solar Water Heating) panels. The walls, floors and roof are fitted with high end insulation and the windows are fitted with triple glazing (HR+++) for the best thermal insulation. A hybrid heat pump and floor heating provides the warmth needed with these cold outside temperatures, together with smart sensors the chalet XL is very energy efficient.
On the inside, the chalet building is divided in three zones. The first one is the common one, where everyone comes together to enjoy each other’s company. That is where the main entrance, ski room, kitchen, dining-, living room and the swimming pool are placed. The upper floor is a calm space where the sleeping rooms and bathrooms are and where one can step back when tranquility and privacy are needed. The lower floor is an adult retreat with sauna, chilling room and private terrace. Even though the three floors have very different character they are united by a homogeneous design and the breathtaking alpine views which can be admired from every corner of the chalet. The result is a well designed sustainable family chalet with ski in and out.
